You Are My Sunshine Receives 2nd Place
My latest piece was just awarded 2nd place in the Guild of Charlotte Artists Summer Show.
Here are the comments from judge, Brian Neher
A wonderful example of Impressionism that makes use of the spontaneous, accidental effects that can be achieved when using a palette knife. The application of thick paint on the flower petals helps to bring texture and depth to the subject. The subdued, grayed down areas of the blue background help to balance out the pure yellow and orange colors that are found in the flowers. In addition, the texture of the paint in the background is handled differently than the flowers. More scraping and thinning with a palette knife has taken place here which allows the background to give the illusion of receding, while the thick impasto in the flowers brings them closer to the viewer. Although painted more loosely in style, the viewer is left with a clear picture of what the subject is and allowed a fair amount of opportunity to interpret that subject in a very personal way.
The 20 x 20 will be on display at the GoodNews Shop at 1412 Providence Rd, Charlotte through Aug 30, 2023. Stop in and see all the many pieces on display.
